I write to you as a member of Amnesty International USA with deep concern over the violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. The U.S. government is uniquely positioned to have tremendous impact in this fragile moment to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further suffering.

The tragically overdue ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas will bring some urgently needed relief to millions of people after 15 months of unimaginable suffering. But there is much more work to do to end the genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip, secure justice, and address the root causes of this conflict.

I am urging you to:

Do what you can to ensure the current ceasefire is permanent and that ALL civilian Israeli hostages and Palestinians arbitrarily detained are released;

Appeal to the Israeli government to allow life-saving fuel, water, and food into Gaza as well as ensure the Israeli government grants access to independent human rights monitors into Gaza to uncover evidence and reveal the extent of violations towards accountability;

Immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale, or transfer to the Israeli government of all weapons, munitions, and other military and security equipment for as long as the government is using them to violate international law.

The need for a permanent ceasefire, respect for international law, and for the rights of all victims to truth, justice and reparation, is more pressing than ever.

The time to act is now.
