Tell President Trump: CLOSE GUANTÁNAMO

The military detention facility at Guantánamo Bay is a glaring, longstanding stain on the human rights record of the United States. Today, it continues to hold 15 Muslim men, many who are not charged with any crimes and were tortured by the U.S. government.

The military detention center at Guantanamo is a huge waste of taxpayer dollars, costing more than $540 million a year to maintain for just 15 detainees. It has facilitated torture and other grave human rights violations. And it has not made the United States safer or stronger.

Act now: Tell President Trump that instead of expanding the facilities at Guantanamo to hold migrants, he should close it down now.

Dear President Trump,

After more than 22 years of injustice, I urge you to finally shut down the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay. The U.S. government's use of indefinite detention without charge as a response to the attacks of September 11, 2001 has been unlawful from the outset.This detention regime must be brought to an end.

The impunity that persists in relation to the enforced disappearance, torture and other ill treatment, and other human rights violations committed against these detainees is unacceptable, and a stain on the U.S. human rights record. Torture and enforced disappearance are crimes under international law.

As an Amnesty International supporter and supporter of human rights, I urge you to ensure a lawful solution for the detainees still held at the Guantánamo Bay facility by: either transferring them for release, or bringing individuals to justice in accordance with international law and standards and without recourse to the death penalty.

All detainees already cleared for transfer should be transferred immediately to countries where their human rights will be respected. The remaining men who have not been charged with a crime should likewise be transferred as soon as possible. Those who were subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment must receive genuine access to rehabilitation and redress. Finally, those responsible for torture and enforced disappearance must be brought to justice in a fair trial.

Please, do the right thing now – close Guantánamo Bay once and for all.
