Since Afghanistan’s descent into crisis, more than 76,000 Afghans have been evacuated to the United States, and millions more are still seeking a safe place to resettle. Thanks to strong advocacy, the Biden administration granted temporary protected status for them — but this grants them just a “stay of deportation” rather than a true welcome.

Congress has the tools to give these refugees a permanent home in the U.S. The Afghan Adjustment Act was JUST reintroduced, and it would grant Afghans a roadmap to citizenship so they can stay in the U.S. long-term.

Dear Member of Congress,

I write on behalf of Amnesty International with deep concern about the safety and wellbeing of Afghans seeking safety in the United States. I ask you to keep taking steps to prioritize building an immigration system that is based on humanity, compassion, fairness, and respect.

You can do that by working to pass an Afghan Adjustment Act to establish a roadmap to citizenship for Afghans seeking safety in the United States, and expand humanitarian pathways for Afghans left behind.

Thousands of people who fled Afghanistan are STILL in a state of uncertainty. If the U.S. truly aims to convince the world that its commitment to human rights  and for Afghan evacuees rises beyond hollow press statements and speeches to the country, it should take these steps to ensure more permanent protections for Afghan individuals and families.

We cannot allow this issue to be swept under the rug. Too many people have experienced such suffering and hardship. I hope I can count on you to prioritize these steps as my Member of Congress!
