JUST IN: The White House announced it will finally terminate the Title 42 expulsion policy on May 23, a policy wielded by both the Trump and Biden administrations under the guise of public health. It was misused over one million times to forcibly send asylum-seekers to places in Mexico where they faced violent attacks or to deport them back to the very danger they fled from in their home countries.
This is a huge victory for asylum-seekers and their allies, particularly Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities who lifted their voices in unison to protest it, and advocates like you who joined their chorus of calls.
But with this announcement came resistance, including from a group of lawmakers appealing to fear-mongering xenophobia instead of fact in the lead up to the midterm elections. It’s more important than ever for the public to get loud and say: Title 42 expulsions must unequivocally and irrevocably end.
Furthermore, the US’ historic ill-treatment of Haitian migrants doesn’t stop when Title 42 does. The Biden administration must also stop deporting Haitians, period.
