WITHDRAW TRUMPED-UP CHARGES AGAINST JA’AFAR JA’AFAR

Ja’afar Ja’afar is a Nigerian journalist and editor of the Daily Nigerian, an online publication. Ja’afar loves to investigate serious crimes such as corruption. On 14 and 15 October 2018, he published two videos relating to a serving Governor in one of Nigeria’s northern states, which allegedly show the governor receiving bribes from contractors. This resulted in threats to his life and family which made him flee from Nigeria.

Although the court has ruled in favor of withdrawal of charges brought against him by the Governor and ordered him to pay Ja'afar the cost for expenses incurred in the court case, but on 15 July 2021, the Governor again filed new charges against him.

Ja’afar Ja’afar and other journalists in Nigeria are working under threat. Amnesty International is calling on Nigeria authorities to dismiss the charges against Ja'afar Ja'afar and allow journalists in Nigeria to work freely without persecution and harassment.
