TAKE ACTION FOR BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2021
Apple Daily Newspaper Closed and Staff Arrested Under National Security Law
Police took unprecedented measures against Apple Daily, the only pro-democracy print paper in Hong Kong, resulting in its closure on June 24, 2021. In less than a year, founder Jimmy Lai, six senior executives and two editorial writers were arrested. Lai is currently serving a twenty-month term at Stanley Prison. Authorities subsequently froze HK$18 million of assets, forcing the media company to cease operation due to insufficient funds.
Authorities accused the newspaper of “colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security” by publishing articles related to foreign countries imposing sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong government officials. Amnesty International believes that Jimmy Lai and Apple Daily were targeted due to the newspaper’s criticism of the Chinese and Hong Kong governments.
