BIDEN: BE A LIFELINE FOR AFGHAN REFUGEES
The failure of the United States to put in place an adequate evacuation system after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, resulted in tens of thousands of at-risk Afghans arriving to the United States via humanitarian parole, a status that is typically granted for only 1 or two years.
We need to remind President Biden that now is the time to reverse course and show true leadership. The way to do it is by working with Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act to ensure a roadmap to citizenship for all Afghans seeking safety.
After escaping a deadly situation, entering the U.S. on humanitarian parole, suffering from uncertainty and an unknown fate, once Afghans’ parole expires, they will face a new set of hurdles as they attempt to find alternative pathways to remain legally in the U.S. This can go both ways, either they will find themselves stuck in asylum processing for years on end, or they will be forced to go back to a dangerous situation where their lives are at grave risk.
Send your letter to President Biden, and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to hold them accountable to their human rights obligations. We need your help to secure progress towards these critical next steps:
- Work with Congress to pass an Afghan Adjustment Act to establish a roadmap to citizenship for Afghans seeking safety in the United States by the end of the year.
- Immediately halt all deportations to Afghanistan and designate Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status, so that Afghans cannot be sent back to a dangerous situation.
The Biden administration CAN help Afghans in need — but they need to hear from us to take appropriate action.
Take a moment to customize your letter — the more personalized it is, the more likely your demands will be heard. We’ll send it to President Biden, and Sec. Mayorkas, and send a copy to your U.S. senators and representative so they know you’re speaking out on this issue.
