This is a *critical* moment to ensure that tens of thousands of Afghans find real, lasting safety in the U.S: We need to urge Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act to establish a roadmap to citizenship for Afghans seeking safety in the U.S., and expand humanitarian pathways out of Afghanistan.

In the midst of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan last August, the U.S. welcomed tens of thousands of at-risk Afghans via humanitarian parole, a status that is typically granted for only one or two years.

Now, many of them only have 10 months left until they lose their status and face possible deportation back to Afghanistan. If families are forcibly returned to Afghanistan, they will face oppression, violence, and retribution for leaving.

Congress CAN help Afghans in need — but they need to hear from us to take appropriate action.

To my U.S. Senators and Representatives --

I’m writing as a member of Amnesty International to encourage you to stand up for Afghans who have made the United States their new home and urgently pass the Afghan Adjustment Act.

Tens of thousands of Afghans who were paroled into the United States after the chaotic military withdrawal are now living in limbo without a clear path to stay here permanently. It is morally irresponsible to bring tens of thousands of at-risk Afghans to the United States and then simply abandon them to a broken immigration system. The Afghan Adjustment Act is the right way to see the Operation Allies Welcome mission through.

Rather than punishing Afghan arrivals for being evacuated, Congress has an urgent obligation to ensure they have a chance to become lawful permanent residents so they can start putting down roots in their new community and regain a sense of home.

Amnesty’s commitment to offering refuge from violence and persecution requires our elected leaders to demonstrate moral leadership. If the U.S. truly aims to convince the world that its commitment to human rights and justice in Afghanistan and for Afghans seeking safety rises beyond hollow press statements and speeches to the country, it must take action today.

Afghans are already thriving in their new communities all across the United States, but the continued uncertainty of their status has posed challenges for some prospective employers and made it more difficult for all evacuees to find stable, long-term employment.
