Yet, the Biden administration has reiterated it will end the evacuation process. This will leave women’s rights activists and other human rights defenders, religious minorities, journalists, and more vulnerable groups behind.

ALL people have the right to seek safety and refuge. But right now, the U.S. is allowing red tape to slow and delay the evacuation process in Kabul. We can’t let that happen.

Dear President Biden,

Amidst the crisis unfolding in Afghanistan, I am writing to urge immediate and meaningful action by your administration to ensure the safe evacuation of vulnerable Afghan populations, and to provide a lifeline to millions of internally displaced Afghans and Afghan refugees. 
Withdrawal from Afghanistan without facilitating people’s fundamental right to seek safety and asylum could result in tragedy. And under the current circumstances, if the United States ends the evacuation process by August 31st, as it has publicly stated, then it would almost certainly leave thousands of women’s rights activists and other human rights defenders, religious minorities, and more vulnerable groups behind. 
The current course of action by the White House has only fanned the flames of this human rights and humanitarian catastrophe. Every moment that your administration continues not to course correct could have horrific consequences, exacerbating the already atrocious failures to support the people of Afghanistan, including the Afghans who risked their lives and those of their families to provide assistance to the U.S.
I urge your administration to: 
1) Provide for the prompt evacuation of Afghan civil society workers, journalists, activists, rights defenders, SIV candidates, and other vulnerable individuals who request evacuation to the United States or to a safe third country pending the adjudication of their applications;
2) Provide pathways for vulnerable Afghans to safely travel to the airport and depart the country without regard for their connections to the U.S. government or U.S. based organizations, ability to produce travel documentation, or their qualification for narrowly-tailored and cumbersome visa programs.
3) Utilize humanitarian parole for vulnerable Afghan civil society workers, journalists, activists, human rights defenders, SIV candidates and other vulnerable individuals to allow for quick and humane relocation to the United States;
4) Designate Temporary Protected Status for Afghanistan and halt all deportations of Afghan nationals
5) Work with Congress to set aside funding for a humanitarian response that is appropriate to the scale of the crisis; 
6) Use every diplomatic avenue available to press Afghanistan’s neighbors to open their borders to refugees;
7) Work with the United Nations and the international community more broadly to stand up an infrastructure for humanitarian assistance that can address this developing crisis; and 
8) Work with the United Nations to lay the groundwork for genuine accountability by pressing for an unbiased and independent inquiry into abuses committed in Afghanistan by all parties to the conflict.

As a committed human rights advocate, I have heard and appreciated your pledge to prioritize human rights in your foreign policy. This issue cannot be the exception – please, take every necessary measure to ensure the safety of the Afghan people.
