Urge lawmakers: Permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule!

The Global Gag Rule is a dangerous and harmful U.S. foreign policy that blocks global funding for non-profits and clinics around the world that use their own money to provide abortion services or even information about abortion services to patients. President Biden ended it temporarily, but we need to make sure that another president can’t bring it back with the stroke of a pen.

Here’s how: the Global HER Act would permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule. It has majority support in Congress — but Congressional leaders STILL aren’t treating it with the priority it demands. That’s why human rights advocates are urging House and Senate leaders to pass the Global HER Act to protect the human rights of people across the world.

THIS is our opportunity to end the Global Gag Rule once and for all — but time is running out. While Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer have expressed support for the Global HER Act, we need more than that — we need them to make it a priority.

That’s why we need your help. Urge Congressional leaders to permanently end the Global Gag Rule by passing the Global HER Act.

Dear Majority Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi,

I am writing as you as a member of Amnesty International USA to ask you to prioritize ending the Global Gag Rule through any means, and to advance the Global Heath, Rights and Empowerment (HER) Act (H.R. 556 and S. 142), which would permanently repeal the deadly Global Gag Rule.
 
The Global Gag Rule forces health care providers to choose between U.S. global health assistance and the ability to counsel and provide clients with an accurate and full range of safe and legal reproductive health options. It severely restricts access to lifesaving care around the world, threatening the health and life of the world’s most vulnerable, disproportionately impacting women—especially poor women, LGBTQI+ people, and young people.

President Biden rescinded the Global Gag Rule, now Congress has the chance to end it once and for all. Without permanently repealing the policy, future presidents can reinstate the policy, interrupting vital health services, weakening health systems, harming LGBTQI+ communities, and raising rates of unsafe abortion.

Ending the Global Gag Rule for good will advance global health, empower communities, and promote equity and human rights. It must be a priority for this Congress, this year. Please do everything you can to take legislative action to permanently end this deadly policy.
