Tell the NYPD: No Facial Recognition Technology

UPDATE: New York City’s public comment period has ended, but our work to stop the use of Facial Recognition Technology hasn’t. Amnesty has launched a new group as a part of our Ban the Scan program called the Decoders project – where volunteers can have a direct, individual impact by identifying surveillance cameras from the safety of their own homes.

Facial recognition threatens the human rights of Black and Brown people, amplifying racially discriminatory police practices. In the hands of police, it can threaten the freedom to protest — and we already see Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) using it to surveil and intimidate millions.
Amnesty is fighting for a ban on the use of facial recognition technology, and right now, we have a critical window: Until February 25, the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the largest police department in the United States, is accepting public comments on their proposed policy on facial recognition technology. We can stop law enforcement from being able to use this rights-abusing technology — but only only if we act now.
