Human rights defenders are under threat worldwide — they face intimidation, harassment, imprisonment, and even death. Five individuals in this year’s Write for Rights highlight these exact dangers. These stories range from Jani Silva, an environmental human rights defender who has faced intimidation and constant death threats in Colombia for her role in defending the Amazon to that of Germain Rukuki, an NGO worker who was sentenced to 32 years in prison in Burundi for his human rights work.
Also included in this year’s Write for Rights is Teyonna Lofton, a young woman from Chicago who was shot during a drive-by shooting while she stood in line outside of a store.
Each of these unique stories offer a glimpse into the experiences of individuals struggling each day to defend human rights and just trying to survive.
