It’s long past time: end violence against women!

Living free from violence is a human right, yet millions of women and girls suffer disproportionately from violence. At least one out of every three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. In some countries, up to seventy percent of women have experienced some form of violence. Women who experience violence are prevented from fully participating socially, economically, and politically in their communities.

Violence against women is a human rights violation and public health issue, and ending violence against women should be a top U.S. priority. The International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA) would do just that: this bipartisan bill would make ending violence against women and girls a U.S. priority, streamlining U.S. work, and building on previous successes and lessons.

Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to ask you to support the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA). In some countries, up to seventy percent of women have experienced some form of violence. Women who experience violence are prevented from fully participating socially, economically, and politically in their communities.

These statistics are horrifying, but we can help change them. The International Violence Against Women Act is a bipartisan bill that takes a multifaceted approach to violence against women. It would streamline the US’s current developmental work and will not require any extra funding. IVAWA:

•	Establishes a clear Global Strategy on how to combat violence and calls for collaboration with other agencies, governments, and organizations
•	Develops Country Plans which will be comprehensive, individualized accounts that explain what violence women face and how that violence will be addressed in each country
•	Makes the Office of Global Women’s Issues a permanent fixture in the State Department, with the purpose of directing the US’s foreign policy approach in relation to gender
•	Regularly reports and briefs Congress about violence against women and the US’s efforts to prevent it
