Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian pediatrician and hospital director from Gaza, has been arbitrarily detained by Israel for more than 19 months without charge or trial. He has reportedly been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment while in detention. He is growing weaker every single day.

This week, members in the House of Representatives are working on an emergency letter urging Secretary Rubio to secure his freedom. We urgently need every lawmaker to cosign it and make it impossible for Sec. Rubio to ignore.

Dear Congressperson,

I am writing to you as a constituent to ask you to take urgent action for someone whose life is in grave danger.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is a respected pediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Occupied Gaza Strip, who had been leading efforts to provide care amid bombardment and shortages at the last functioning major medical facility in the north of Gaza. For over 19 months, Israel has arbitrarily detained Dr. Abu Safiya without charges or trial, using the abusive Unlawful Combatants' Law. A lawyer who recently visited Dr. Abu Safiya reported that Dr. Abu Safiya has been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment while in Israeli detention.

Testimonies collected by Amnesty International reveal a dreadful reality inside Israeli prisons and detention centers, where Palestinian detainees – including health workers – face systematic torture and other ill-treatment, and are denied their right to a fair trial and due process, along with access to adequate food and medical care. In light of this, I am extremely concerned for the life and wellbeing of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

I've learned that a group of House Representatives drafted an emergency letter led by Reps. Raskin, Dexter, and Ruiz, urging Secretary Rubio to secure Dr. Abu Safiya's freedom. If you haven't already, please sign on and do what you can within your legislative power to help save Dr. Abu Safiya's life. If you have, thank you and please continue to do everything you can.

Dr. Abu Safiya is a man who has dedicated his career to saving lives. Now, it is incumbent upon us to save his.
