2026 is already the deadliest fiscal year on record for ICE. Over 50 people have died in ICE detention since the start of the Trump Administration. In 2025 alone, 17 people died in CBP custody. And ICE has already fatally shot and killed 11 people.

I’m writing as your constituent and a concerned human rights supporter of Amnesty International, following the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Sebastian Durán Guerrero, and the still to be named 28 year old Mexican man killed in an enforcement action in St. Augustine, Florida. Lorenzo and Johan were fathers who left behind their children, families, and communities that loved and cared for them. This is on top of the over 50 deaths in ICE detention and the 17 people who died in CBP custody in 2025 alone. The deaths, the cruelty, and the mass detentions and deportations must stop.

Earlier this summer, Congress gave ICE and CBP an additional $70 billion in funding, totaling a quarter of a trillion dollars of funding in just the last year. These horrifying deaths - 3 in a span of one week - are a direct result of Congress’s failure to rein these agencies in, hold them accountable, and conduct oversight while continuing to reward them with unlimited funds to continue the chaos and cruelty. Across the country, communities are living in fear as federal immigration enforcement has escalated into unchecked violence. People have been killed, families terrorized, and neighborhoods flooded with agents acting with impunity. The racial profiling of our families, friends, and neighbors, and the arrests and entering cars and homes without warrants must stop.

When federal agents are patrolling the streets of U.S. cities and shooting in broad daylight, the bare minimum response is to stop the funding that enables these violent agencies to carry out these acts. You have the power and responsibility to stop this. What you do now will be remembered by future generations – take a stand today because we have the power to do so. Our communities’ lives and rights depend on it.
