Mohamed Tadjadit, known as the poet of the Hirak movement, has been arbitrarily detained since January 2025 solely for exercising his rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Algerian authorities have repeatedly targeted Mohamed because of his work. He is awaiting trial together with 12 other activists on state security charges punishable by long prison terms and the death penalty.

Your Excellency,

I urge the immediate, unconditional release of poet Mohamed Tadjadit, arbitrarily detained since January 2025. His convictions stem solely from peaceful activism and poetry shared online. Tadjadit and 12 other activists face charges including “conspiring to incite citizens against state authority,” which carry the death penalty. These accusations are based on social media posts and private communications regarding Algeria’s political situation, which the prosecution labeled as “terrorism” without evidence. On January 14, 2026, a separate three-year sentence for “glorifying terrorism” was upheld. Please drop all charges and end the criminalization of peaceful dissent.

I urge you to:
- Immediately release Mohamed Tadjadit and all those held for exercising their human rights.
- Quash all convictions and drop all charges against Tadjadit and his 12 co-defendants.
- End the criminalization of peaceful dissent and stop the misuse of "terrorism" charges to silence activists.
