ACT NOW: Pass the Protecting Human Rights and Public Health in Foreign Assistance Act

This January, the Trump administration dramatically expanded the deadly and dangerous Global Gag Rule (GGR), a policy that prevents organizations who receive U.S. global health assistance from providing any information, referrals or services for legal abortion or advocating for access to abortion services in their country. The policy now also includes the prohibition of support for transgender people as well as organizations that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This is yet another example of the Trump administration weaponizing foreign assistance to export its extreme anti-rights agenda around the world. The expansion of the GGR is about controlling speech, restricting services, and exporting a narrow ideological agenda to the rest of the world.

The Protecting Human Rights and Public Health in Foreign Assistance Act (S.4436 / H.R.8582) would effectively block Trump's expansion of the Global Gag Rule.

I am writing you to ask you to sign on to the Protecting Human Rights and Public Health in Foreign Assistance Act (S.4436 / H.R.8582) The Trump administration’s cruel expansion of the Global Gag Rule poses life-threatening consequences for LGBTQI+ people around the world, as well as the health and wellbeing of women, girls and other marginalized communities across the world.

The expanded Global Gag Rule exports a dangerous and extreme anti-human rights agenda that undermines HIV prevention programs, sexual health and reproductive health services, and discrimination protections across the world.

The Global Gag Rule prevents organizations receiving US global health assistance are prohibited from so much as providing information on safe, legal abortion services to their clients. What’s more this policy has been now been expanded to prohibit organizations from supporting the rights and health of transgender people, which is often lifesaving care.  Additionally, if an organization accepts US global health assistance, it would be barred from supporting legislation that seeks to prevent hate crimes.

I urge you to support the Protecting Human Rights and Public Health in Foreign Assistance Act (S.4436 / H.R.8582) to block the Trump administration from weaponizing foreign assistance to export its extreme anti-trans, anti-abortion, and anti-DEI agenda around the world.
