Tell Congress: We Are All at Risk. Don’t Let Trump Expand Guantánamo

President Trump just signed an order that will expand detention at Guantánamo. We can’t let him send more people there to spend their lives behind bars without ever being convicted of a crime. Bigger picture, President Trump has threatened peaceful dissent and attacked those who disagree with him; we can’t let him claim immense powers in the name of “national security”—powers he could use to abuse human rights.

We are all at risk. Tell your Members of Congress to speak out.

I categorically oppose the executive order that President Trump signed, paving the way for more indefinite detention without charge or fair trial at Guantánamo. For more than sixteen years, the United States government has attempted to normalize holding people indefinitely without charge or fair trial. But this is not normal. Everyone has the right to a fair trial, and a right against arbitrary and indefinite detention.

I am concerned at the prospect of expanding. President Trump’s national security powers, broadening the potential for future human rights abuses. Guantánamo’s continued existence lays the groundwork for new groups of people to be indefinitely detained. We are all at risk when abusive national security powers, including Guantánamo, expand.

I urge you to make a public statement as soon as possible, condemning this executive order and pledging to support legislative efforts to prevent its implementation.

Please protect human rights and speak out against this unlawful and immoral executive order.
