DEMAND STATE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR FEDERAL IMMIGRATION ABUSES

Across the U.S., paramilitary-style federal immigration enforcement has unleashed horrific violence, racial profiling, mass detention, and killings — much of it carried out with impunity. Communities are traumatized, and people are denied justice as the Trump administration refuses transparency and blocks critically needed investigations.

When the federal government fails to police itself, states have the authority and the responsibility to step in. Governors play a critical role in protecting human rights by establishing independent, state-level Accountability Commissions to collect evidence and investigate abuses committed by federal immigration agents within their state borders.

These Commissions can collect and preserve evidence so that cases can be documented for investigation and potential prosecution at the state and local level, or by the Department of Justice in the future.

TAKE ACTION: Urge your governor to establish an Accountability Commission to investigate unlawful use of force by federal agents in your state. NO federal agency should be allowed to operate above the law.

I am writing as a concerned human rights supporter and member of Amnesty International to urge you to take proactive action in response to the deadly abuses committed by federal immigration agents operating with impunity across the U.S.

Communities in so many pockets of the country have experienced racial profiling, excessive force, mass detentions, unlawful and arbitrary arrests, and unlawful killings linked to federal immigration enforcement. Families have been tear-gassed, children have been detained, and people have been violently arrested without warrants. Federal agencies are refusing to cooperate with state and local law enforcement investigations in states like Minnesota.

These actions constitute serious human rights violations and reflect an alarming expansion of authoritarian abuses by the federal government operating without oversight.

I urge you to establish an independent, state-level Accountability Commission with the authority to investigate abuses committed by federal immigration agents within our state: including deaths, excessive use of force and lethal force, racial profiling, unlawful detention, and violations of due process. The primary goal of this Commission should be to hold agents and federal officials accountable.

The Commission should aim to collect evidence and testimony from impacted individuals and communities, assess violations of state law for potential investigation and prosecution, and to create and preserve a record for potential prosecution by a future U.S. Department of Justice that is willing to act.

I also urge you to ensure that mechanisms are available so your constituents can safely submit evidence and testimony, and that transparency, public participation, and accountability remain central to the process.

No federal agency should be permitted to operate above the law. Our state should lead the process of demanding accountability with resolve and courage.

Your constituents are counting on you. People across the country are watching. Please show leadership by acting now to protect human rights, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that those responsible for the violations we are witnessing are held to account.
