DEFENDER OF RIVERS AND FORESTS MURDERED
Juan López was a tireless activist who dedicated his life to defending the environment. In particular, he fought to protect the Guapinol and San Pedro rivers, and the Carlos Escaleras Botaderos Mountain National Park in Northern Honduras. He was also a recognized spiritual leader and a municipal councilor. Juan López was murdered in his vehicle after leaving a religious service in Tocoa, on September 14, 2024. According to public reports, Juan López was shot by an unidentified person on a motorcycle. The trial for his murder is expected to take place at the end of 2025. Despite the serious levels of risks that defenders like Juan Lopez face, Honduras has not yet taken all necessary steps to guarantee their safety.
