TAKE ACTION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

"FIGHTING TO PROTECT OUR AMAZON, AND YOUR FUTURE"

The group of 15 Amazonian activists, hail from the northern Amazon region of Ecuador and are united in their determination to combat the devastating effects of gas flares, which plague their communities daily with toxic emissions, overpowering smells, incessant noise, and blinding flames. In February 2024, an explosion from an improvised device made of quadua cane, paper, and a tube detonated outside the home of Leonela, a 14-year-old member of the group, likely in retaliation for her activism and the Guerreras’ protest at the National Assembly. The attack underscores the grave risks that climate justice and human rights face when speaking out against corporations and governments.

Instead of being celebrated for their bravery, the young defenders face stigma and violent intimidation. Rather than investigating the threats against them, the Ecuadorian authorities told the group that they will only provide them with protection if they stop their activism.
