The horrors of "Alligator Alcatraz" are not isolated — they are a glimpse into the entire U.S. detention system.

At this notorious facility, reports include people subjected to maggot-infested food, overflowing toilets, extreme temperatures, and virtually no access to medical care or lawyers. And it’s not just here — at ICE's Krome Detention Center, people have suffered from abuse by guards and died from medical neglect.

This system was designed for cruelty. With billions of taxpayer dollars, ICE and DHS are expanding detention centers. Anti-immigrant governors are using citizens' tax dollars to open immigration detention centers — and your state could be next. We must immediately mobilize to shut it all down.

Demand that the Department of Homeland Security shut down Alligator Alcatraz and every state-run and ICE detention center in the U.S. Let's flood DHS offices to demand they stop the cruelty.

Secretary Noem,

I am writing alongside millions of human rights supporters to urge you to shut down "Alligator Alcatraz," Krome Detention Center, and every immigrant detention center across the United States.

The conditions documented at "Alligator Alcatraz" -- swarms of mosquitoes, maggot-infested food, extreme temperatures, overflowing toilets, and virtually no medical care or legal access -- are shocking and appalling. But these abuses are not unique. From Krome Detention Center in Florida to facilities in Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and beyond, people in DHS custody are routinely subjected to cruelty, neglect, and dehumanization.

Immigration detention under your watch has been rife with human rights violations. These facilities are designed to criminalize people seeking safety, to strike fear into immigrant communities, and to profit from suffering -- all at taxpayer expense.

This system is indefensible. I urge you to:

- Shut down Alligator Alcatraz and all state and ICE-run detention centers nationwide.

- Release individuals from detention, so they can navigate their immigration cases in freedom and with legal support -- unless a judge decides that their detention is absolutely necessary.

- Halt the construction or expansion of new detention facilities.

The U.S. must uphold human rights and dignity. It is time to end this cruel, unnecessary, and abusive detention system.
