The Trump administration is showing us that it will use any tool of the state, including ICE and even military forces, to target immigrants, asylum-seekers, protesters, and anyone who dares to defend their rights. It’s a chilling preview of what’s to come.

We need to protect peaceful protest, not criminalize it. And we need to reject a world where military force being used to repress people speaking out for human rights and protecting their neighbors becomes the new normal.

Dear Member of Congress,

I’m writing to you as a constituent and a human rights supporter on behalf of Amnesty International with deep concern about the Trump administration’s decision to deploy military troops in U.S. communities in response to peaceful protests.

This is a deeply dangerous and unnecessary escalation. ICE raids, militarized policing, and in Los Angeles, the use of National Guard troops to repress peaceful protests are actively threatening the rights and safety of our communities – especially our immigrant friends and neighbors.

I am asking you to take immediate action: step in to stop this assault by doing what you can to block President Trump’s escalating use of ICE, police, and military forces to repress peaceful protest and target immigrants before more harm is done.

The President recently released a memo authorizing these actions, and the memo raises serious concerns about its legality in that it misstates facts about the current situation and contravenes the language of the law cited to federalize the U.S. National Guard. It is also broadly written to apply anywhere that protests erupt when ICE agents and other federal law enforcement engage in heavy-handed, militarized raids of work sites, court houses, and immigrant communities in cities across the country.

President Trump recently stated that such nationwide actions are coming and that any protests will be met with “equal or greater force” than what we’ve recently witnessed in Los Angeles.

A transparent and accountable government is a cornerstone of the rule of law. The executive’s arbitrary and unlawful actions in utilizing the military to suppress peaceful protests are eroding that rule of law and the effective functioning of government essential to upholding and protecting human rights and abiding by the law.

Congressperson, I urge you to immediately and publicly call for the withdrawal of all federal troops and agents deployed for protest suppression. Congress must act now to block this misuse of power and protect the right to peaceful protest and the right to seek asylum, and ensure all people can  live free from fear.
