Carrying a concealed weapon may currently be illegal in your state—but that could change with the passage of H.R. 38 / S. 65, the “Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.” This dangerous bill would force all 50 states to allow individuals to carry concealed firearms, even if they do not meet your state’s safety requirements or background check standards.

Congress has a duty to protect Americans from gun violence—not expand access to it. Gun violence continues to be the leading cause of death among youth ages 1–17, and we lose over 100 people every day to this crisis. We cannot afford to roll back common-sense protections in our communities.

State legislatures across the country have consistently enacted laws to regulate who may carry a firearm within their borders, as well as where and how firearms may be carried. These laws reflect the unique needs and concerns of each state. States have the responsibility and the right to regulate gun ownership within their jurisdiction and to provide support and safety for communities impacted by gun violence.

H.R. 38 and S. 65 threaten to override these carefully crafted state laws by allowing federal law to supersede them. If passed, this legislation would force states to honor concealed carry permits issued by other states—even those with significantly weaker standards. Without a uniform federal background check requirement or training standard, this could put all Americans, including law enforcement officers, at increased risk.

Gun violence claims the lives of over 100 people every single day in the United States. We should be working toward solutions that make our communities safer—not laws that make it easier for dangerous individuals to carry hidden, loaded weapons across state lines.

For these reasons, I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 38 / S. 65. Our states deserve the right to protect their residents through sensible, localized gun laws.,
