Jose Rubén Zamora, 68 years old, had been under house arrest for four months. However, on March 4, an appeals court partially annulled the process and overturned the house arrest decision. His lawyers filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Justice, which has not yet been resolved.

Dear Ambassador Hugo Beteta,

I call on Guatemala’s Supreme Court, the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, and the international community to act immediately to secure the release of journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, founder of elPeriódico.

Zamora has spent over 800 days in pretrial detention on charges widely seen as politically motivated. In October 2024, a court granted him house arrest. But in March 2025, that decision was reversed without justification—despite his compliance, fragile health, and the lack of a final sentence.

Ten international organizations, along with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, have condemned this as a violation of international human rights standards. His ongoing detention is retaliation for his journalism and a threat to press freedom.

I urge you to ensure that the Supreme Court of Guatemala grant Zamora’s amparo and returns him to house arrest. The Supreme Court of Guatemala to ensure transparency and due process in all hearings.
