URGENT: STOP NEW FUNDING FOR ICE

Right now, Congress is about to vote on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of 2026 that will increase funding, expand ICE detention, and does nothing to rein in the cruelty, chaos, and unchecked militarization in our communities.

Congress is considering allowing ICE’s budget to grow even bigger, rubber stamping their lawlessness and their attacks. At a time when masked agents are shooting people in broad daylight, unleashing teargas and violence against peaceful protesters, and breaking down doors in residential neighborhoods, we need cuts and accountability.

Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing as a constituent of yours and a concerned human rights supporter of Amnesty International to encourage you to oppose the FY26 DHS appropriations bill that increases the funding lines for ICE’s detention and enforcement budget and provides no meaningful accountability measures.

Congress handed DHS nearly unlimited sums in the reconciliation bill that was enacted last July. Providing more is unconscionable, given ICE and Border Patrol’s increasing brutality and lawlessness in our communities.

The DHS Appropriations Bill will add hundreds of millions more taxpayer dollars to ICE’s toolbox. This funding comes on top of the $45 billion ICE has already received over four years for detention through the reconciliation bill, which would allow ICE to jail approximately 130,000 people per day. ICE is already jailing an unprecedented 70,000+ people, including 6,000 people in family detention, the highest number in US history.

I am concerned that ICE will use this funding to continue a massive infrastructure expansion which includes local, state and federal jails and prisons, military bases, warehouses and more.

This bill takes a “business as usual” approach to immigration enforcement spending at a time when ICE is shooting people in broad daylight, unleashing teargas and violence against peaceful protestors, breaking down doors in residential neighborhoods, and pulling resettled refugees from their homes to transfer them to Texas detention facilities.

The bill does not include meaningful or impactful checks on ICE and Border Patrol’s enforcement and detention activities. Nor does it include any real accountability mechanism to ensure that ICE follows the laws Congress puts in place. Communities are struggling to make ends meet, and we deserve better than our taxpayer dollars going to programs that violate human rights, destroy our communities and make all of us unsafe.

Instead, I strongly encourage you to invest our taxpayer dollars in our communities to support a strong social safety net and an immigration system that protects access to asylum at the border, invests in a robust welcoming infrastructure, allows our undocumented neighbors to step out of the shadows with a roadmap to citizenship, and upholds human rights.

I urge you to vote no.
