Any day now, our lawmakers are going to vote on a sweeping budget reconciliation bill that would send over $150 billion of taxpayer dollars to fund President Trump’s mass deportation and detention machine, including funding more ICE aggression in our communities, like what we saw this past weekend in Los Angeles.

This same bill would gut lifesaving federal programs like Medicaid, food assistance for children, and student loans.

I am writing as a constituent of yours and a concerned human rights supporter of Amnesty International to encourage you to oppose any funding that cuts critical resources for our communities in order to fuel President Trump’s plans for mass deportations, mass detention, family separation, and border militarization.

Communities are struggling to make ends meet, and we deserve better than our taxpayer dollars going to programs that violate human rights, destroy our communities and don’t work. Instead, I strongly encourage you to invest our taxpayer dollars in our communities to support a strong social safety net and an immigration system that protects access to asylum at the border, invests in a robust welcoming infrastructure, allows our undocumented neighbors to step out of the shadows with a roadmap to citizenship, and upholds human rights.

This massive funding package undermines people’s dignity, separates families, and hurts our communities. I urge you to vote no.
