I'm writing to you as a constituent from your district and a human rights supporter.

On the heels of Congress approving nearly $70 billion in additional funding for ICE and CBP and at a time when families are struggling with the rising costs of living and facing cuts to essential programs like food assistance and health care, I am deeply concerned about the children and families that are detained in the South Texas Family Residential Center (Dilley) in Dilley, Texas, where ICE is detaining hundreds of parents and children under inhumane conditions.

Amnesty International reports the following out of Dilley:

1. Families have been held for weeks on end, violating the Flores Settlement Agreement, which sets out minimum standards for the treatment of migrant children in government custody, including limits on the length of time that children can be detained; 
2. Most families never get to speak with an attorney or appear before a judge before they are deported, and many are sent back to dangerous, life-threatening conditions;
3. People with chronic health conditions or medical emergencies have been denied necessary care and infants and children are experiencing alarming weight loss;
4. Families have been denied access to adequate clean drinking water, forced in many cases to drink tap water that is foul-smelling and known to cause upset stomachs; 
5. Children frequently are not allowed access to educational opportunities or even crayons to play with.
More than 60,000 Amnesty International members and supporters have urged Congress to reject more funding for ICE and CBP, and we will continue fighting to end mass detention, abusive enforcement practices, and policies that separate families and undermine human rights – including by asking you to do all you can and leverage your position as a legislator to advocate to close Dilley.

Detaining children under any circumstances violates international law, and I am deeply concerned about the families and children detained there right now.

Additionally, the administration intends to open another family detention center located on a toxic waste site in Alexandria, Louisiana, where unaccompanied children will be detained. Work on Alexandria detention center has been stalled — so we have a small and urgent window to stop it from being built at all.

No matter where someone came from or how they arrived in our country, their life is of value and they should be treated with dignity and respect.

The Dilley detention facility -- and all cruel detention centers, especially Alexandria -- are dangerous and inhumane, and you and your colleagues have real leverage right now. Please use it. Our communities' lives and rights depend on it.
