I'm writing as a constituent and also as a supporter of Amnesty International to express my grave concern over President Trump's actions since his return to office. I urgently call on you to exercise your responsibility to uphold the rule of law by exercising oversight on the executive's actions.  The rule of law - meaning no one is above the law - is essential to the protection and realization of human rights.

President Trump has issued executive orders and seemingly given carte blanche to Elon Musk's DOGE to direct actions that appear to violate federal law and encroach upon the authority of Congress, representing grave risks to human rights. These actions include dismantling USAID and other government agencies; firing government watchdogs, officials, and staff; refusing to spend funds already allocated to executive agencies by Congress; as well as accessing sensitive, personal data of millions of Americans and not acting to protect that data from further dissemination and exposure to third parties. Additionally, Trump is not only allowing but encouraging the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security to arrest, detain, and potentially deport individuals exercising their rights to freedom of speech and to peacefully protest.

A transparent and accountable government is a cornerstone of the rule of law. The executive's arbitrary and unlawful actions are eroding that rule of law and the effective functioning of government essential to respecting, protecting and fulfilling human rights.

What's more, human rights accountability requires a functioning government that is accountable to the people and to human rights standards. Congress must hold the administration – and itself – to these standards.

As your constituent, I'm calling on you – and all of Congress – to honor your oaths, protect your constituents, and uphold the rule of law, including the United States' obligations under international human rights law, by serving as a check on the president’s actions. You can do this by doing the following:

-Urgently hold oversight hearings to ensure that the rule of law and human rights are being protected;
-Ensure that any "cost-cutting efforts" are carried out legally and in a way that puts human rights at the forefront;
-Make no appropriations that fund human rights violations;
-Hold town halls to provide a mechanism for your constituents to ask questions and hear directly from their lawmakers;
-Do not confirm cabinet appointments without their explicit assurance that they will uphold human rights and the rule of law; 
-Ensure the administration upholds Mahmoud Khalil's due process rights, after his unlawful arrest and detention, and releases him immediately, as well as all others currently targeted under dubious statutory authority of the Secretary of State for arrest, detention and deportation for protesting and the content of speech he deems has "potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences";
-Leverage your Congressional powers to more visibly and proactively demand laws be followed, that there is transparency in decision-making by the Trump administration, that decisions do not lead to violations of domestic or international law, and that guardrails that protect human rights are followed or put into place.

I am gravely concerned that the executive appears to be systematically dismantling key aspects of the federal government and taking power away from the people to participate in decision-making through their representatives in Congress.

Your prompt and bold action is required to uphold the rule of law.
