TikToker jailed for criticizing president
TikTok influencer Neth Nahara, a thirty-two-year-old singer, and mother with two young children, was arrested for openly criticizing President João Lourenço on her TikTok channel.
On her channel, she shared personal stories of her day-to-day realities, bravely sharing that she had HIV and gave advice on how to stay healthy, unafraid to speak the truth.
Neth was well known in Angola for speaking freely about the potential in her country. She was fed up with the lack of schools, unemployment rates, poor education, and poverty. In August 2023, Neth recorded a live TikTok expressing discontent. The next day, the authorities arrested her and sentenced her to six months in prison. Less than a month later, this sentence increased to two years.
Let the president of Angola know speaking freely to power and expressing political discontent is not a crime.
