Harassed, intimidated and criminalized for protecting their ancestral lands

The Indigenous Wet’suwet’en Nation’s longstanding way of life is under threat.

They have lived on and cared for their ancestral lands for generations, sustaining their culture and raising their children. Despite having the right to decide what development happens on their lands, Coastal GasLink Pipeline began constructing a fossil fuel pipeline through their ancestral territory, without consent of their clan.

Members of their clan took steps to stop the pipeline construction, but their peaceful actions have been met with intimidation, harassment and criminalization. The police have responded with four violent raids on Wetʼsuwetʼen territory, using weapons, helicopters and dogs. More than 75 land defenders have been arrested since 2019.

Call on Canada to stop criminalizing Wet’suwet’en and other Indigenous land defenders .
