Cameroon 130+ Missing Men and Boys

Ten years after the disappearance of over 130 men and boys in Cameroon, their families still seek truth and justice.

In the fight against Boko Haram in the Far North of Cameroon, security forces arbitrarily arrested hundreds of men and boys in December 2014. Amnesty International has confirmed that at least 130 men and boys have disappeared. Families still seek answers about the fate of their loved ones. Dear Ambassador Essomba,

I am writing to seek the whereabouts of over 130 men and boys missing since December 2014. Amnesty International has documented that over 200 men and boys were arrested in Magdema and Doublè by security forces in December 2014. Some were released, and 25 died while in custody. But over 130 remain unaccounted for after a decade. Their families still await answers about what happened to their loved ones.

I urge your government to:

•	Tell the families the causes and circumstances of their deaths and where they are buried. Without knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones, they cannot provide a dignified burial or properly grieve. The loved ones have struggled for truth and justice, as well as reparations for a decade without their loved ones.

•	Conduct a judicial inquiry into the other violations committed on 27 December 2014 and bring those responsible to justice.

•	Provide the families and survivors adequate reparations and compensation for losing their loved ones. The families, mostly women, are left to struggle with the financial burden of providing for and caring for their families after losing their loved ones.
