Call on authorities in China to reveal the whereabouts of two boys who disappeared

Twin brothers Imamhesen and Imamhusen Memetrasul were only 11 years old the last time they spoke with their father in August 2016. He was working in Kyrgyzstan and remembers, “They called me saying, ‘Dad, you should come, otherwise they will detain us.’” He spoke with his wife, Nurmangul Ebey, in September, but she was reportedly detained shortly thereafter. After that call, the father lost contact with his family. He heard that his wife was in a prison in Kucha, but regarding his children, he stated, “I have no idea where they may be.” He believes that they were all detained because he left Xinjiang. He says: “I want her to be alive, I want to see her again, I want to live with her again, I just want my family with me.”

This family, which is of Kyrgyz and Uzbek ethnicity, is from Kargilik in Xinjiang, a region where an enormous number of predominantly Muslim people — perhaps 1 million or more — have been detained since 2017. Amnesty International has gathered evidence of crimes against humanity committed by Chinese authorities in Xinjiang, one of which is the enforced disappearances of persons. While the circumstances of some detainees are known by their families, in many cases the relatives have been unable to obtain any information about their loved ones. Many children have been taken to state-run “orphan camps” or” boarding schools” after the relatives taking care of them have been detained.

Send an email calling on President Xi Jinping to reveal the whereabouts of Mr. Memetrasul’s family and all disappeared persons in Xinjiang and to allow forcibly separated families to be reunited as promptly as possible.
