URGE CONGRESS TO PASS ETHAN'S LAW AND SAVE LIVES

In 2020, guns became the leading cause of death for children, surpassing motor vehicle deaths, cancer deaths, and deaths caused by other injuries. Still, it is not unlawful for an adult to leave unsecured firearms accessible to unsupervised minors.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that if parents decide to keep firearms in their home, all firearms should be locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. However, only 3 of 10 adults in households with children report storing all guns unloaded and locked up. We have a responsibility to the children across this country to end these senseless tragedies.

How do we address this? Ethan’s Law would address this deadly gap in the current law and our elected officials have the power to make the change we need.

Ethan’s Law (S726 HR1564) would require safe and secure storage of firearms, state incentives to adopt a similar law, and access to civil justice for injured persons.

My name is {user_data~First Name} and I am a constituent writing to ask you to prioritize and pass Ethan’s Law (S726 HR1564) safe storage legislation. In 2020, gun violence became the number one cause of death in children and teens in the U.S. In this country, if a child or teen dies, the most likely reason is that they were shot. However, U.S. law does not otherwise expressly make it unlawful for an adult to negligently or recklessly leave unsecured firearms, including handguns and long guns, accessible to unsupervised minors. We must change this. We must require gun owners to keep their firearms securely stored.

Ethan’s Law (safe storage legislation) is important to me because storing firearms securely protects children and teens by preventing unintentional shootings, gun suicides, and gun theft. We have a responsibility to the children to end these senseless tragedies. Gun owners must be responsible and accountable for their firearms. Children and teens should not pay the price for negligence. Ethan’s Law will assist in putting a stop to these preventable tragedies by ensuring that gun owners are properly securing their firearms and making them inaccessible to children, teens, and anyone else who should not have access to them.

As my congressperson, you have the power to prioritize safe storage. One life lost is too many, so I ask that you support and pass Ethan’s Law.
