END FORCED EVICTIONS OF HOMES AND FARMLAND

There’s a good chance the cell phone or laptop you’re reading this on was made using cobalt mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Cobalt is a mineral used in rechargeable batteries that power everything from smartphones to electric cars. And as the world is shifting away from fossil fuels, it’s becoming more and more valuable… but at what cost?

People living in the DRC are being forcibly evicted from their homes and farmlands to make way for large industrial cobalt and copper mines. In some cases, these evictions involve horrible acts of violence.

Mr. President,

When you visited Kolwezi in 2021 you promised that under your administration, things would be different, and the rich mineral resources of the Democratic Republic of the Congo would benefit its people first. However, research by Amnesty International and the Initiative for Good Governance and Human Rights tells a grimmer story.

Frontline communities living in and around Kolwezi are forcibly evicted from their homes and farmlands to pave the way for industrial cobalt and copper mining, often without proper consultation or just and fair compensation.

These findings also show that resettlement options are scarce, and alternative housing lacks basic amenities and social infrastructure such as schools, health centers or recreational sites.

Given these alarming findings, I join Amnesty International in calling upon you to:
 
- Put a moratorium on further mass evictions in the mining sector 
- Urgently implement procedures and laws to protect the rights of frontline mining communities. This includes meaningful consultation, transparency in information sharing, adequate prior notice, fair financial compensation, and other forms of effective remedy

I urge you to work in collaboration with communities, civil society, and DRC provincial authorities to end forced evictions at these mine sites.

By doing so, you will show the world that the DRC is ready to lead the world in a just energy transition that leaves no one behind.
