Tell your state legislators: Pass proactive legislation and reject bans and restrictions.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, state legislators have introduced hundreds of anti-abortion bills. 14 states have made abortion illegal, and many others have passed restrictions that make accessing care nearly impossible.

This is not the only path forward. State legislatures can—and have—passed proactive laws to protect abortion providers, shield patients from legal battles if they travel out of state for care, require medication abortion access on college campuses, and more.

Proactive legislation affirms the human right to abortion by going beyond the minimum to expand access to care for as many people as possible. State legislatures must pass bills that build upon the foundations of abortion rights while rejecting any bans or restrictions.

Across the country, lawmakers have implemented legislation to protect abortion providers, shield patients from legal battles if they travel out of state for care, require medication abortion access on college campuses, and more. These kinds of bills build upon the foundations of abortion rights to expand access for as many people as possible.

In addition, I strongly urge you to swiftly reject any and all legislation that bans or prohibits abortion in our state. Access to abortion is a human right. Any law that restricts people’s ability to receive safe or legal abortion health services in any way is a violation of that fundamental right.

Finally, I ask you to work with your colleagues to overturn any existing restrictions in our state. Remaining barriers that impede access to routine medical care are unacceptable.
