With the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, the Supreme Court destroyed decades of precedent to protect the human right to abortion. After the ruling, many states opted to further erode abortion access—but others chose to take proactive steps to protect it. 14 governors issued 18 executive orders to defend abortion access, the majority of which shield abortion patients and providers from legal threats.

Governors aren’t the only statewide officials who can take action. Attorneys general wield considerable power and can be the first line of defense against state attacks on abortion rights. Since the ruling, some attorneys general have challenged or refused to enforce pre-Roe abortion bans, protected the data privacy of people seeking abortion care, and fought to better protect abortion rights.

Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy against their will—for any reason—is a violation of those rights. Abortion must be legal, safe, and accessible to all.
