Days have turned into a year — we've watched in devastation as tens of thousands of people have been killed, families ripped apart, hostages taken into captivity, and lives upended amid the ongoing violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel.

The U.S. MUST do more or else it is complicit in this carnage.

Send a letter to Congress and President Biden to urge them to demand an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of civilian lives, ensure access to life-saving humanitarian aid, and enable the safe return of remaining hostages, and to stop funding weapons to the Israeli government that may be used in violation of international law.

I write to you as a member of Amnesty International USA with deep concern over the ongoing violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. The U.S. government is uniquely positioned to have tremendous impact in this conflict to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further suffering.

For over a year now, we have witnessed horror unfolding on an unimaginable scale in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel.

Days have now become a year for those who remain hostage in Gaza, who been held in dire conditions and may have been subjected to torture and other abuses.

And more than 2 million Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip are struggling to survive amidst a human-made humanitarian catastrophe, and the level of civilian casualties has been unprecedented. 
 
The ongoing air and ground offensive by Israeli forces in Gaza is having cataclysmic consequences for Gaza’s civilians, who also remain without access to drinking water, food, medical supplies and fuel as a result of the Israeli government’s siege. At least 1.9 million Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to the attacks and as a result of orders from the Israeli army to move to other areas in Gaza. No where in Gaza is safe. Civilians in Israel also continue to come under attack from indiscriminate rocket fire from Hamas and other armed groups.

I am urging you to:

1. Publicly call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and appeal to the Israeli government to allow life-saving fuel, water, and food into Gaza.

2. Immediately suspend the direct and indirect supply, sale, or transfer to the Israeli government of all weapons, munitions, and other military and security equipment for as long as the government is using them to violate international law.

As the conflict rages on with no end in sight, the need for a ceasefire, respect for international law and for the rights of all victims to truth, justice and reparation, is more pressing than ever. It is shameful and a collective failure of humanity that one year on still there is no ceasefire, still no release of hostages. Such atrocities should never have been committed let alone be allowed to continue.

The time to act is now.
