Over the past year, we’ve seen growing attacks on people seeking asylum in the U.S. From rhetoric about an “invasion” and Biden’s asylum ban to Governor Abbott placing buoys and razor wire into the Rio Grande. Seeking asylum is a human right, and people and families fleeing harm and persecution should be treated with dignity and respect.

Despite growing attacks on the right to seek asylum, communities around the country are mobilizing to welcome people seeking safety. From volunteers greeting buses of migrants sent to northern cities by the Governors of Arizona and Texas, to communities coming together to provide housing for families, there is a growing movement of welcome sweeping cities and towns across the U.S.

We’re calling on local leaders across the country to #ChooseWelcome and show their support for welcoming asylum seekers. I’m writing to you today because I’m gravely concerned about the escalating tactics against people seeking safety at the U.S. border such as Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star and President Biden’s asylum ban.

On the campaign trail, President Biden promised to restore asylum, but this latest policy is just a repackaging of former President Trump’s heartless policies. His asylum ban does not represent my values. And I don’t think it represents our community’s values either. Instead, I stand with the hundreds of people across the country who have mobilized in recent years to welcome asylum seekers with dignity.  I’m asking you today to sign the #ChooseWelcome pledge to show the administration that we support the human right to seek asylum and our community is ready to welcome.
