North Carolina: Abortion is a human right

On May 16, North Carolina’s legislature overturned the Governor’s veto and upheld a bill that bans abortion after 12 weeks. This ban is a devastating blow for women, girls, and people in North Carolina who need abortion care, but also for many across the South who have turned to North Carolina for abortion care because of abortion bans in other southern states.

Abortion is healthcare — and it’s a human right. Abortion bans and restrictions go against the recommendations of all major medical associations — and they interfere with the right of people to control their own bodies.

What’s more, the majority of North Carolinians do not want to see further abortion restrictions, yet the North Carolina legislature ignored this and pushed through this devastating ban. Three legislators — Representative John Bradford, Representative Jon Hardister, and Senator Michael Lee — had even specifically promised constituents they would not vote for additional restrictions on abortion, yet still voted to ban abortion at 12 weeks.

Take action to remind these legislators that abortion is a human right — and they have a duty to uphold the rights of their constituents, NOT restrict them!

I am writing today to ask you to live up to your promises to your constituents and not restrict the right to abortion. Despite having said you would not vote for any additional restrictions on abortion, you supported the 12-week abortion ban, now law, in North Carolina.
 
This law will disrupt and deny care to North Carolinians seeking a range of reproductive healthcare services, including abortion, miscarriage management, and pregnancy care. Abortion bans and restrictions go against the recommendations of all major medical associations -- and they interfere with the right of North Carolinians to control their own bodies.
 
Abortion is basic healthcare —- and it’s a human right. And the majority of North Carolinians do not want to see further abortion restrictions. You don’t have to abandon your own beliefs to agree that the government shouldn’t tell a woman what to do with her body. No one should be forced to be pregnant or have control over their body taken away by the state.
 
All over the world, we are watching North Carolina, and you -— and we call on you to support the rights of your constituents to abortion and to trust that North Carolinians -- not the government -- know if carrying a pregnancy to term is right for them.
