Billie Jerome Allen has been on federal death row for well over half his life. His case, involving a Black man convicted by an overwhelmingly white jury with no DNA evidence linking him to the crime, exemplifies why the death penalty should be abolished in the U.S.

I welcomed the abolitionist pledge you made prior to taking office. The commitment to ending federal executions was a courageous stance, underscoring your vision of the United States as a leader in human rights. However, I am writing today to express my growing concern at the lack of action to make this pledge a reality. I fear that, without immediate steps, the promise of abolition will remain unfulfilled, leaving this power in the hands of future administrations.

Despite the hope your administration inspired, its defense of federal death sentences, opposing relief, and moving individuals closer to execution has raised questions about its dedication to this important pledge. Currently, 44 men remain on federal and military death row, among them Billie Allen, whose case exemplifies the systemic issues that make the death penalty too flawed to fix.

During your tenure as President, you proclaimed that the “United States is leading by the power of our example – demonstrating that our commitment to human rights begins here at home”.

Please work towards your abolitionist pledge by using your constitutional power to commute the death sentences of Billie Allen and all others on federal and military death row before time runs out.
