As your constituent, I ask that you urgently support an Assault Weapons Ban. Assault weapons were designed to kill and maim as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, and yet there is currently no federal law regulating them.

Assault weapons are particularly lethal because rounds fired typically achieve a velocity of over 3,000 feet per second, compared to handguns that fire rounds closer to 1,000 feet per second. Medical providers explain that unlike wounds caused by bullets from a handgun, these high velocity bullets cause damage that extends beyond the bullets’ path, causing more harm and greatly increasing the lethality.

Semi-automatic assault weapons and large-capacity magazines also pose a threat to the law enforcement officers responsible for protecting the public during live shooting incidents. The International Association of Chiefs of Police recommends that the U.S. pass laws banning military-style assault weapons so that officers are not faced with shooters armed with military-grade weapons that can easily rip through protective body armor.

Finally, research demonstrates that the use of large-capacity magazines in crimes declined following the enactment of the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, and states with bans on large-capacity magazines experience fewer mass shootings than those that permit them.

Gun violence in the U.S. is already a human rights crisis. The least we can do is to stop the deadliest weapons -- and the ammunition that acts as a force-multiplier -- from being easily accessible.
