As a constituent of {user_data~City~your district}, {user_data~State}, I write with deep concern around the billions of taxpayer dollars being used to fuel cruel border militarization, mass immigration detention and deportation and the inherent abuses in these systems.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) use taxpayer dollars to harm, jail, and deport people coming to this country seeking safety, as well as those who are part of our communities and have lived in the United States for years or even decades. The tragic death toll at the hands of ICE and CBP underscores that these agencies are plagued by system-wide abuses.

Stopping this flow of money is a critical step to protecting immigrant communities. As the decision-makers on federal funding, Congress has the responsibility each year to rein in these agencies that tear apart families and loved ones and hurt our communities.

We need members of Congress to use their power of the purse by significantly cutting funds for ICE and CBP. Instead, our tax dollars should be used to keep families together and give our communities the resources they need to thrive. Continuing the massive funding of ICE and CBP diverts funding from critical programs to fulfill the rights to education, healthcare, and environmental resilience while furthering the cruelty of mass expulsions at the border and abusive immigration detention.

Members of Congress must stand up against the United States’ inhumane and racist system of border militarization and mass immigrant incarceration. As you begin to determine government funding for yet another year, we call on Congress to stop putting lives in jeopardy by wasting billions more tax dollars on ICE and CBP, and to instead fund programs that protect human rights and  increase all our collective wellbeing.

I urge you to dramatically cut funding to ICE and CBP in fiscal year 2023.
