#SilencedByForce: Demand freedom and justice for Venezuelans illegally detained

UPDATE: The situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate and human rights are at imminent risk. In the early hours of August 1, 2017, videos surfaced showing the Venezuelan intelligence service (SEBIN) arresting two activists and forcefully carrying them out of their homes, where they were serving sentences under house arrest. Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience Leopoldo Lopez and Mayor of Caracas Antonio Ledezma were taken away in the middle of the night, without arrest warrants.

In the middle of the night on August 4, SEBIN returned Ledezma to house arrest. Leopoldo Lopez and other dissidents remain behind bars and must be released.

Amnesty International has documented on numerous occasions that Venezuelan authorities are illegally detaining those who speak against the current government. Hundreds are being arrested solely for their dissent opinions. Take action now to stop this silence by force.

Yon Goichoechea, a well-known student activist and leader in the opposition party Voluntad Popular, has been languishing in detention since August 2016 even though a court ordered his release months ago.

He is one of dozens of people held illegally, as part of a sweeping crackdown by Venezuelan authorities in an effort to repress dissent. The government is trying to silence any critical voices that speak out.

Act now and sign the petition to demand that the Venezuelan authorities end the illegal practice of arbitrary detentions.

You can help us fight this brutal crackdown and support those expressing dissent.
