Azerbaijani peace activist and human rights defender Leyla Yunus was on her way to a press conference on July 30, 2014 when men believed to be police stopped her car and forced the driver to change direction. Several hours later her husband Arif, who is also a human rights defender, was also detained.
Both face charges including treason and fraud. Leyla and Arif are outspoken critics of the Azerbaijani government, and Prisoners of Conscience. Leyla has diabetes and kidney problems and her health has deteriorated rapidly. The authorities will not let her be hospitalized or provide the medication she needs.
